Sony announced its latest mobile phone in the Xperia series last September, the Xperia 5 II. Released on 12th October 2020, it’s more like a compact version of the Xperia 1 II that was launched in early 2020. This user friendly, pocket sized phone surprisingly comes with more advanced features and functionality of a bigger superior phone. This might exactly be the phone you’ve been looking for! Who is it for
As per the user opinions and reviews, this is more like a tool for those who wants the best out of the mobile phone they paid for. Manufacturers have been trying to give you as much control over the phone as possible. Therefore this is for everyone who seeks for an easy-to- use phone, packed with many progressive features.
Sony has been brave enough to adopt the 21:9 ratio for its devices because it wasn’t common to have 20.5:9 or 21:9 aspect ratio for the displays in many other phones before. Sony set the trend and now more manufacturers are designing phones with 21:9 displays. This aspect ratio, which is also known as “ultrawide” offers huge benefits when it comes to gaming due to the broader view. The 1080p resolution or FHD as you know it, gives more realistic and sharper images and is very popular among the users today.
The device is also equipped with 120Hz refresh rate to make it feel smooth and responsive for the convenience of gamers and a motion blur reduction feature which takes things up-to 240 Hz to give you everything in clearer, sharper view. Device has Fingerprint (Side mounted), compass, colour spectrum and other sensors along with face unlock feature and Android 10 operating system.
Other features – Supports HDR, X-Reality engine, Triluminos display.
Since the build is slim and tall, it’s easy to hold but 158mm length makes it a little harder to reach the top of the screen with one hand. But with its overall weight of 163g, shape and size of 158×68×8mm , it easily slips into your pocket and doesn’t create a bulgy look in there. Having Gorilla Glass 6 for the front and back is extremely beneficial for the safety and durability of your device as it delivers up-to ×2 in scratch performance and can survive drops from up-to 1.6m onto hard rough surfaces.
It’s also optimised with touch sensitivity and optical clarity which is why Xperia 5 II is known to be very user friendly. A vigorous aluminium frame stands in between the glass panels. Anyway Sony has decided to go with a few colour for their newest mobile.
Other features – Single nano SIM or Hybrid dual SIM, Ip65/IP68 dust & water resistant (upto 1.5m for 30 minutes)
The phone contains Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor, Snapdragon 865 which gives you the ability to shoot 200-megapixel photos and 960 fps slow motion videos at 720p resolution and capture 8K and 4K videos at up-to 120 frames per second. The processor is also optimised for 5G and evolved graphics for gaming. The Adreno 640 GPU is a 2-core graphics processing unit and offers 20% improved performance than its predecessor Adreno 630, hence supports HDR gaming along with a snapdragon 365 processor.
RAM and storage:
Xperia 5 II comes with a 8 GB RAM and 128GB storage. The 256GB version is exclusively available to Asia. The device also supports micro SD cards for expandable storage space.
The non- removable Lithium ion 4000mAh battery in the device is extremely efficient and includes an electronic controller unlike more traditional ones to regulate power and discharge flows to prevent it from overheating and exploding. Since Sony uses graphene heat dissipation pad in the back of the phone to keep it cool, wireless charging isn’t available.
Other features – USB power delivery 3.0, Fast charging 21W
Xperia 5 II’s rear camera consists of a triple lens setup ; Ultra wide – 12MP, 16mm, Wide -12MP, 24mm and telephoto – 12MP, 70mm. Apart from that, other features like LED flash, panorama, eye tracking and HDR are there including the Video capturing facilities in 4k@24/30/60/120fps HDR. The 8MP front camera can shoot in HDR and can capture videos in 1080p@30fps.
Real-time eye AF is the feature in this device which seeks for the eyes of the objects and focuses there. The main camera is designed for quality, low light shooting and 20fps burst shooting is specially designed to capture the moments in fast action.
The stereo speakers of the phone are located in front and gives out excellent, clear and loud sounds. 360 reality audio optimizes your music experience while Dolby Atmos makes the sounds of the movies amazingly good. DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) is a technology developed by Sony which accurately enhances the quality of compressed audio files you have. This doesn’t affect FM programs or videos.
Other features – 3.5mm jack, Dynamic vibration system, 360 Reality Audio hardware decodingX
Although Sony Xperia 5 II is loaded with advantages and useful features, not having a FM radio, non-removable battery and unavailability of wireless charging stand as disadvantages. According to some users, the display isn’t as bright as the other main competitors in the field. The selfie cam is decent but outdated and the charging is slower despite having an excellent battery life.
